Matt will discuss the upcoming lithium-ion battery landfill ban that will go into effect on December 1, 2026. Lithium-ion batteries pose fire risks to garbage collectors and material recovery facilities, but when recycled, they yield valuable precious metals. DEQ has been working with local governments, recyclers, and the battery industry to strengthen the circular economy for lithium-ion batteries in North Carolina. In the spring of 2026, DEQ will launch a campaign to educate residents about how to properly manage batteries at the end of their usable lives.
Matt is a program analyst that has spent seven years with the Recycling and Materials Management Section at NCDEQ. Matt previously worked as a grant manager at The Recycling Partnership.
